Indocil Arts Vintage Rat Trap Helmet.

Ron Hopes Rat Trap Fuel Altered HelmetRon Hopes Rat Trap Fuel Altered Helmet
I love painting helmets with personality and for racers with a rich history. Being a huge fan of drag racing it is no surprise that one of my favorite families to paint for is the Hope family that currently race the Rat Trap Fuel Altered. The Rat Trap, as we know it today, is the latest version of the original built in 1968 at the shop of chassis builder Dennis Watson. The previous two Rat Trap Fuel Altereds ran from 1965 through 1968 and were conventional in design. The 1969 creation however was revolutionary.
It was designed with independent front suspension, and a nitro burning Chrysler. Hemi engine and a unique paint scheme. The name Rat Trap was the product of the “engine wars” of the 60’s when Chevrolet powered altereds (big block Chevrolet engines called “rat motors”) challenged the Chrysler powered altereds. The Rat Trap was one of four cars which made up the legendary Fuel Altered Tours of 1970, ‘71, and ‘72. Other cars on that tour were Willie Borsch with the Winged Express, Pure Heaven II and the Magnificent 7.
With such a great history I wanted to paint Ron’s helmet to look like it was very old and could have been one of the original race helmets. Due to the stringent safety standards there is no way to make an old helmet race worthy so we made Ron’s helmet look distressed with a fully functional interior that meets current standards and regulations. This helmet is brand new and all dirt scratches and fake chips are protected under flat clear.

The King Wearing an Indocil Crown

How cool is it to paint for the King! Starting to paint helmets in the late 1990’s I never thought I would have the opportunity to Paint a helmet for Richard Petty. It was a pleasant surprise when we were asked earlier this year if we could replicate Richards open face Bell helmet he wore during his 200th win.  This year’s Coke Zero 400 July 2-4 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of Richard Petty’s historic NASCAR win.

On July 4, 1984, Petty captured his 200th carer NASCAR victory in the Independence Day holiday classic at Daytona International Speedway with President Ronald Reagan in attendance. It was the first time a sitting President of the United States attended a NASCAR race and it was the final time Petty won a NASCAR race.

September 18, 2009 – Brady Short was awarded the unique King of Indiana Sprint Series Champion’s Helmet in ceremonies at Bloomington Speedway. The helmet, which features a medieval king in its artwork, is truly one-of-a-kind.  Short allowed that the helmet is highly prized and he didn’t plan to wear it in competition unless it was at a track without any dust, mud or rocks.

The KISS Champion’s Helmet is a Simpson Performance Products Vudo model, which provides top-of-the-line safety equipment for Short.  As in previous years, Sprint Car & Midget Magazine, Simpson and Indocil Art are the sponsors of the award.  Both Simpson Performance Products and Sprint Car & Midget Magazine are recognized as established leaders in their fields, with Simpson’s broad safety and racing product base, and the magazine’s reputation for strong feature articles, photos, editorials and race reporting for the past seven years.  Indocil Art’s Noah Ennis produced the unique artwork, as he has for all of the KISS Champion’s Helmets.

The King of Indiana Sprint Series is organized and conducted by the individual Indiana sprint car race track promoters, including Gas City I-69 Speedway, Kokomo Speedway, Paragon Speedway, Tri-State Speedway, Lawrenceburg Speedway and Bloomington Speedway, to provide the best sprint car racing and more information is available at our website, http://www.kissracing.com/ .

Fayetteville, NC. October 3, 2009. Chris Ferguson in his #22 Rocket Chassis took home the win Saturday night in the Carolina Clash’s 50 lap, $5,000 to win main event at Fayetteville Motor Speedway. The win moves Ferguson into 3rd in points just 8 points out of the 2nd place position which is held by Ricky Weeks. Dennis Franklin’s bad luck made him plummet from 2nd in points all the way down to 4th in points. Franklin now trails 3rd place Ferguson by 30 points. Jeff Smith is still your current high point man with a 42 point lead over Ricky Weeks in 2nd.

Indocil Driver Jason Meyers clawing his way closer to the World of Outlaws #1 Spot

If you haven’t noticed the World of Outlaws currents points battle heating up then you haven’t been paying attention.  Over the past four weeks, the spread between the top 3 contenders has closed from over 100 points to within 38 points after the completion of Friday night’s race at Eldora Speedway.  But the real heat is between the top two with Jason Meyers trailing Donny Schatz by only 9 points with 8 features left in this 2009 season.

Meyers lined up in the 5th row of the A main .  As the green flag waved, Meyers raced underneath Darrah down the front chute and into 1, but then Darrah used momentum around the top to move back past off of turn 2.  On the first restart Meyers went low to try and take the 7th position, but was unable to make the pass.  Meyers continued to try to find a hole with no success.  On lap 12, the caution flew again for the flat RR of new leader Terry McCarl.  Again another restart, but still no passing.  Finally Meyers was able to pass the 15H of Hafertepe off of turn 4 to move into the 6th position.  On lap 17, the red flag flew for the #2 car of Dale Blaney.  Prior to the red flag, Meyers had closed on the 3c of Conley and on the restart Meyers went way up in the cushion and made the pass around the 3c machine.  Meyers had now moved into the 5th position and was hot on the heels of the #89 of Darrah.  Then  Darrah and Saldana touched sending Darrah into the inside wall.  Meyers just cleared Darrah almost clipping him and possibly ending his night.  The crash moved Meyers into the 4th position directly behind the #9 of Joey Saldana.

On the restart with only 4 laps to go, Meyers went high to try and pass Saldana but could not gain enough momentum.  The two cars raced nose to tail for the remaining laps with Jason Sides taking the win, followed by Tim Shaffer, Joey Saldana, Jason Meyers, and Cale Conley rounding out the top 5.

The 4th place finish for Meyers versus the 6th place finish of championship point’s leader Donny Schatz moved Meyers to within on 9 points now.  With rain canceling the Saturday night at Lernerville, the two will head into one of the toughest tracks in the country next weekend separated by 9 mere points.  “This is our chance.  You don’t get these chances every day and this is it.  The #15 team and the #9 team are two of the toughest teams in the business and I can see this being a fight right down to the end.  We are ready for, and to be honest, looking forward to it,” said Meyers.

INDY 500 – Helio Castroneves, Indocil Art & The Andretti’s

by ryanyoung on May.25, 2009, under Indocil News, Racer News

I hate to make the first post on the bog almost a negative but it is killing me and I need to vent. I missed having a helmet in victory lane at the Indy 500! I got a call a few weeks ago asking if we wanted to add a new customer to our list of drivers. The driver was getting back into racing after having to be on the sidelines and needed his helmets painted. No problem except his helmets are based in a chrome finish and we wouldn’t be able to get it done in time for the 500. I went ahead and did one in a different finish to see if he would want it for a one off deal just for the 500. I did it but it wasn’t what he wanted to go with so we would just have to wait for his helmets to comeback from chrome. In the mean time Helio Castroneves won the damn Indianapolis 500!!! Missed seeing my helmet in victory lane at the 500!!!!!! Man the agony!!!!! Congratulations to Indocils newest driver though.2009-684

I did however get to see great coverage of our helmet for Marco Andretti. The only problem was the coverage came after he was wrecked in the first few laps ending his day abruptly. What a kick in the gut!

John Andretti had a good run in the Window World car driven for Richard Petty. It was great seeing the King in Indy. It looked like a perfect fit.
